Think, your cellphone is programmed for data-point history.  Not only location & time; (OAT) Outside Air Temperature, Heart Rate, Voting Precinct, Wildfire & Hurricane tracking, Community Income, College Degrees, Census Data, Hawaii DataBook tables, etc, etc, etc  All can be calibrated and displayed on a map. 

ESRI, the developer/marketer of ArcGIS, is used by many governments and corporations for data analytis.  Google Earth is similar version, with limited analysis & display.  A picture is worth 1000 words.
